Happy holidays everyone! We'll see you at the beginning of the new year, but until then hope you have a great time with your family and friends. Thanks for being such lovely readers over the last two months! Can't wait for 2010 and all the exciting stuff we have planned.
As the year draws to a close, we thought it might be nice to end with some lessons we learned while one of us planned our own wedding:
1. Choose your outfits wisely for those times between events. Trust us, you will be getting photographed ALL the time: at brunches/dinners/dholkis/family time, pretty much anything leading up to the wedding. It doesn't have to be an extravagant outfit, maybe just something with color that will pop on camera. Knowing ahead of time will take away some of the headache of choosing your clothes amid the chaos of the wedding. 2. Delegation is key. If you're not a DIY person, please let your crafty cousin take over. She'll love it. And if a family member has a particular talent, use it. Our brother loves music and is a hobbyist DJ so it only made sense to give him complete control over music. Didn’t even have to worry about it once because he knew the bridal party so well. Plus everyone loves feeling included. 3. Don't waste your time focusing on that one person who refuses to be happy and brings negative energy to the wedding. They’re not worth it. Ignore them and focus on all the other people that are there and happy for you. 4. Make sure you have a makeup kit for touch ups - even if you're running late. Pack it ahead of time and designate someone to be in charge of having it at all times. Especially if you’re having portraits done right before the reception - your makeup will melt away under the sun (still a bit of a sore spot). 5. When it comes to the actual wedding day, all the stress will just go away and you'll be so zen. We remember a friend saying “There could be an earthquake right now and you wouldn’t notice” and that’s a good place to be.
What are the most important lessons you learned? We would love to make this a regular feature so please do share.
This next engagement session shot by the talented Shannon of SNS Photography is so much fun. Anjum and Mikey had a little sushi, played with balloons, blew bubbles and frolicked in a park. Oh, and they drank bubble tea, with swizzle straws no less! What more could you ask for?
See, just because we're grownups now, doesn't mean we can't have fun.
If you like pink, then this wedding is for you. Loving all the little touches: the branches with the blossoms, the hanging votives and the stars on the wall. It's pretty in pink done right.
We wanted to start the holiday week off right with a big bash in New York. Turn Loose the Art captured the oranges and blues of this sangeet perfectly. Check out those umbrellas! Plus, it doesn't hurt that everyone seems to be having a great time.
Umbrellas covering the buffet makes it fun! Of course the choreographed dancing. No wedding would be complete without it!
We have the pretty wedding reception coming up next!
Speaking of headpieces, check out these styles from Nicole Richie's House of Harlow 1960 jewelry line. These could work equally well for your wedding or a casual night out.*
And you all know how much we love the idea of jewelry that can be used once the wedding is over.
One of the best things about a desi wedding is all the experimenting that you get to do with your jewelry - you literally get to bejewel yourself from head to toe. Today we thought we'd focus on head pieces: here's a small sample from the simply pretty to the wildly extravagant.
You know how we mentioned we've been in a disco kind of mood? Well our resident DJ, Crime Master Gogo, suggested some songs that would fit in perfectly with that theme. For your reference, DJ Crime Master Gogo isn't an official DJ, he's our brother who spins for all the family weddings. He also has a penchant for Andaz Apna Apna characters.
Here are some songs that would be perfect for a disco wedding, and really, just about any party:
"I Am A Disco Dancer" from the Bollywood classic Disco Dancer. Composed by Disco King Bappi Lahiri.
"Jimmy" by M.I.A. from her second album Kala. This was a cover of the song "Jimmy Jimmy Jimmy Aaja", also from Disco Dancer.*
"Aaj Ki Raat" from the Bollywood hit Don: The Chase Begins Again. Composed by the trio Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, but you may recognize it from the Slumdog Millionaire soundtrack. A.R. Rahman has good taste.
"Blind" by Hercules and Love Affair from their self-titled debut.
*"Jimmy" is literally our family song. We play it all hours of the night and at most weddings with many a home video to prove it. Have you SEEN the original song it's based on? Kitsch bollywood at its best.
Lately we've really been in a retro-bollywood-disco kind of mood and we feel like it's going to make a resurgence. It's not? Just us. Ok. Well we wanted to create a little inspiration board for your next engagement party based on the disco look and voila, here it is!
We figured you could really go crazy for an engagement party with some pinks, navy blues, bubbly, records and sparkle. Or you could rock an afterparty by simply putting up a disco ball like this bride did. Either way, it's a great way to get the party started.
Here's more of Priti and Jaouad's glamorous wedding - photographed to perfection by Karen Wise. The setting for this wedding is, quite frankly, awe inspiring. Guests took boats across Lake Pichola to get to Jag Mandir Palace, where the festivities included dance, music and even fire swallowers!
There's something so calm and solemn about this first photograph, don't you think? How adorable is the little man with his turban! Love the dreaminess of this image.
A one of a kind wedding. Thank you so much for sharing Karen!
